Request for Refund or Prorated Assessment
The City of Chesapeake prorates personal property taxes on motor vehicles and trailers on a monthly basis. If you have disposed of a vehicle or if you have moved into or out of Chesapeake, please complete and remit this form. This information will determine if you are entitled to a prorated assessment and/or refund.
Have you informed the DMV of changes in your address, ownership, or disposition of the vehicle and/or the physical location of the vehicle?
IMPORTANT: Before remitting your Request for Refund or Prorated Assessment, please notify the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) of any changes in your address, ownership, or disposition of the vehicle and/or the physical location of the vehicle. Report changes to DMV by calling 1-804-497-7100, going to your local DMV office, or visiting www.dmv.virginia.gov.

If you have MOVED OUT OF Virginia a copy of your NEW OUT-OF-STATE VEHICLE REGISTRATION must be provided. Failure to provide your new out-of-state vehicle registration will DELAY any potential refund or proration.

If you choose NOT to upload a copy of your out-of-state vehicle registration or any other supporting documentation, you must deliver a copy of your documentation to the Chesapeake Commissioner of Revenue. You can drop it off at one of four locations, email it to cartax@cityofchesapeake.net, or mail it to:
